Raimo was born with a cleft lip and palate, a condition that has profoundly impacted his life since childhood. Children born with a cleft lip and palate often experience underdevelopment of the upper jaw, while the lower jaw grows normally. In Raimo’s case, his upper jaw is narrow, asymmetrical, and underdeveloped, particularly in the area of the cleft. Additionally, his palate is scarred, and one connection between his oral and nasal cavities still requires closure.
Thanks to generous donors, Raimo underwent a bone graft surgery in Finland in August 2024. This successful operation closed one of the connections between his mouth and nose, improved his speech, and laid the foundation for shaping a normal dental arch. For Raimo, this surgery marked the first significant step toward realizing his dream of finally feeling “normal.”
However, his journey is far from over. A future surgery is needed to correct his misaligned nose and jaw caused by the cleft. This procedure will not only enhance his appearance but also boost Raimo’s confidence. It’s not just about a physical transformation – it’s about giving Raimo the chance to live a life where he feels comfortable with himself and in the company of others. The surgery will also help reduce the moments when strangers stare or point at him on the street, and it will empower Raimo to communicate with greater confidence.
